April Austin
Doula & Antenatal Teacher in Milton Keynes

The real story behind why I show up for this work, day after day, and what it means to hold space when the system won’t.

Hey, I’m April.

I’m a doula and antenatal teacher based in Milton Keynes, and for me, this work is personal and political.

I’ve been fascinated by birth since I was seven, when my mum was pregnant with my younger brother and I became totally obsessed. I didn’t understand the power of birth back then, I was just in awe. It was only through my own experiences that I began to see how much the system can chip away at that power.

My journey includes abortion, miscarriage, caesareans, and eventually, a vaginal birth. My first pregnancy cracked something open. I never regretted my choice, but the system abandoned me. It took years to realise I could grieve and still feel sure. My last birth taught me something similar, how much we still need space to process and be held, even when things go well.

None of it was perfect. But it was mine. And somewhere in the contrast, I realised, it’s not us that needs fixing. It’s the system.

That’s what brought me here.

I support people who don’t feel at home in traditional birth spaces. Deep feelers, overthinkers, quiet rebels. Maybe that’s you?

I’m married, a mum of three boys, and I know what it’s like to hold space for others while trying to stay connected to yourself. I live with a brain that never slows down (hello, ADHD + autism), and I believe there’s room in this work for nuance, questions, and grief.

I’m also bisexual, a bit sweary, a bit nerdy, and always up for deep chats about things that actually matter. I’m not big on small talk, but I am here for honest support, quiet rebellion, and the kind of feminist rage that rises when people aren’t treated with the respect they deserve.

I like woodland walks, watching the moon, and conversations that go straight to the heart of things.

My approach is grounded, evidence based, and emotionally attuned. I hold space to ask the real questions, make informed choices, and be met with care.

Quick credentials: I’ve worked in maternity care for over a decade! First as a nursery nurse in postnatal and neonatal units, now as a doula and FEDANT accredited antenatal teacher. I trained with the Perinatal Academy (where I now also work!) and I’m always learning, unlearning, and evolving.

Whether you’re here for a course, birth support, or just curiosity, I’m really glad you found your way here.

You’re allowed to take up space. And if you’re ready, I’d be honoured to hold some of it with you.
